COPA to expose deliberate tax defaulters

The Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) will publicise all institutions which deliberately avoid paying compulsory taxes and levies on a large scale.

The COPA during its meeting on Wednesday decided to submit a list of such institutions and expose them through the media, Parliament’s Communication division in a communiqué said.

COPA Chairman Prof. Tissa Vitharana instructed the Inland Revenue Department to submit to the Committee a list of institutions that have failed to pay due levies within two months. Auditor General W.P.C. Wickramaratne addressing the Committee stated that action should be taken to recover due levy as soon as possible, increasing government revenue.

The Committee on Public Accounts also took into discussion the need for the Justice Ministry and the Finance Ministry to work together to expedite in settling a number of Inland Revenue cases pending in courts.

Commissioner General of Inland Revenue H.M.W.C.Bandara raised the need to amend the law pertaining to tax deficit expeditiously.

Accordingly, COPA Chairman Prof. Tissa Vitharana directed the Department of Inland Revenue to submit the relevant proposals immediately.
