‘Kurampola iron deposit contains over 86 M tonnes’

A research by the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) shows that the Kurampola iron deposit covers an area of about 26 square kilometers and it contains at least 86 million tonnes of iron.

Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that the Buttala Kurampola and Chilaw Panirendawa iron ores are now excavated under a Government’s programme.

The Environment Ministry and the Industries Ministry held a discussion recently on how take maximum use of the iron deposit at the Environment Ministry.

The Ministries have launched a joint programme to maximise the country’s revenue by making use of the most of mineral resources in the country.

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that the Ministry will use the mineral resources for the betterment of the country on the instructions of the President. He said that the GSMB would take steps to work out a plan in this regard.
