Subsidy doubled for turmeric farmers – State Minister Wakkumbura

Development of Sugarcane, Maize, Cashew, Pepper, Cinnamon, Cloves, Betel Production and Allied Products and Export State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura said that the Government has taken steps to double the amount of subsidies for farmers to cultivate turmeric.

About six million turmeric plants will be distributed among householders countrywide for free by the Government in next two months. About 2,300 million rupees will be given to the turmeric farmers as subsidies this year. The State Minister said that five turmeric gardens will be set up with the Army and these gardens will lie in the Kurunegala, Embilipitiya, Ampara, and Anuradhapura Districts in next month. “We need about 7,000 tonnes of turmeric for our local consumption and we will meet the requirement very easily early this year, the State Minister said.
