Tuition classes to restart

The focus has been placed on giving the green light to start tuition classes from January 25, said Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris.

He said that this decision would be made after taking into account the health guidelines specified by the health authorities.

The Minister was responding to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa under Standing Orders 27/2 in Parliament today.

The Opposition Leader noted that there are  around 300,000 tuition teachers in the country and around 2,500 institutions that conduct tuition classes, adding that around one million are directly or indirectly employed by the tuition industry. He said that all these people are affected due to the COVID pandemic and said that the Government should take measures to address this issue. Premadasa also noted that the greatest disadvantage is to the students, adding that the online teaching method is unsuccessful as the majority of students are at a disadvantage due to the lack of equipment and facilities for online learning.
