Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, urged the Government to take immediate action to stop the destruction of the Muthurajawela Sanctuary.

He was speaking at a media briefing held at Bishop's House, Colombo on Thursday.

The Archbishop charged that there was an attempt by a company to take over this land to implement a multi-purpose project in the guise of carrying out a large scale tourist attraction programme. He said Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 947/13 dated 31st October 1996 recognized the remaining area between the Old Dutch Canal and the Hamilton Canal to the south of the Negombo Lagoon as a Conservation Zone.

“It was declared as a wildlife sanctuary. Accordingly, it is clear that a special zone was created to protect the animals and other plants in the area”.

He said signs were also erected throughout the area. The government officially recognized the Kerawalapitiya area as a protected area, except for the area filled with sea sand, up to the Negombo Lagoon.

He urged the Government not to allow any initiatives in the area which would cause environmental degradation.
