Sayumi a promising cricketer and athlete

Sayumi Premaratne, a Grade 10 Student of Mahamaya Girls’ School, Kandy is a prominent Woman Cricket player and a promising Athlete. She showed her class as an outstanding left hand batswoman when she scored an unbeaten knock of 57 runs in the Inaugural Indra Withanachchi Trophy Cricket match held in 2018 representing Mahamaya Blues Cricket team against Mahamaya Golds team and her unbeaten knock of 57 runs helped her team to register a six wicket win over Mahamaya Golds team.

In the following year she received the Best Fielders award at the Indra Withanachchi Trophy Cricket match which was held annually and also the Best Players award for scoring 40 runs.

Sayumi continued her cricket and as a fresher she had the opportunity to play for the School Cricket team at the Girls Cricket Tournament organized by the Sri Lanka Womens’ Cricket Association and at this match she scored 25 runs against Maliyadewa Girls’ College,Kurunegala and 22 runs against another School In Kurunegala and due to her performances Mahamaya Girls Cricket team was selected as one of the Best Eight Cricket teams of the Island. She was awarded School Colours for Cricket in the year 2018.

Sayumi started keeping wickets at the end of the Cricket Season in 2018 and her skills keeping was recognised by the District Cricket Coach in Kandy and she was invited for District Cricket practices. In 2019 Mahamaya Girls’ School did not field a side for the All Island Girls’ Cricket Tournament but participated at the Central Province Cricket Tournament and Sayumi did creditably well in that tournament as a batswoman and she scored 40 runs against Gothami Vidyalaya,Kandy and her team became runners-up. In Athletics she secured second place in 75 Metres Race and Long Jump at the School Sports Meet in her age group in the year 2017 and in 2018 she continued athletics at the District and Provincial Meets.
