Badminton Nationals from February 14

Sri Lanka Badminton (SLB) will conduct the premier event of the annual calendar, the “Badminton Nationals”, from February 14 to 20 at the SLB and MBA courts, respectively.

After their successful completion of the Lanka Shuttle Challenge last December, the governing body decided to conduct this popular event, which takes top place in their annual events list.

This event normally draws in excess of 1000 participants annually. This year’s event will be restricted to competitors over 15 years of age who will be accommodated in the ‘Open’ category. The SLB will host this as a closed-door event and strict accreditation will be enforced to limit numbers within the court premises, prioritising health guidelines.

Moreover, the event will not lack glamour and interest, as Sri Lanka’s top players and a string of die-hard badminton enthusiasts will be vying to take up the challenge, as well as honours. Reigning Men’s Champion Niluka Karunaratne will take time off from his Olympic qualifying campaign to defend his crown while Dilmi Dias will seek to retain her hard-won title, returning to the game after a lay-off to focus on her studies.

The entries for this tournament will open from 11th and will close on January 29 at the SLB Office at Maitland Place, Colombo 7. The Draw is scheduled for February 6, while the event will take off on February 10 with an opening ceremony amidst some of the Champions of yesteryear.

Nevertheless, it’s going to be a smashing contest for all local shuttlers, with the dawn of February. As a blurb quipped, SLB is ready to lay it on for those who love to serve.
