Galle MOHs’ strike today

Medical Officers of Health (MOHs) in the Galle District will stage a strike today, Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) Galle Branch Secretary Manjula De Zoysa said.

He has notified Southern Province Governor Dr. Willie Gamage about the trade union action.

He has said in his letter to the Governor that the decision was made because the effort of the GMOA Galle Branch to resolve the issue of threatening the Galle Municipal Medical Officer of Health (MOH) by the Galle Deputy Mayor through discussions has been failed.

Dr. Manjula de Zoysa said that the issue has been going on for two weeks and as a result, their professional rights are being violated by obstructing Medical Officers’ duties.

After the incident, the MOH Office has been shifted to another location on the request of the Association. However, despite the request for resources to carry out the duties of the MOHs without any hindrance, those have not been provided so far, Dr. Manjula said.

Because of this situation, public health is in jeopardy and COVID control activities have been obstructed, he said.

A discussion between the Galle Municipal Commissioner and the MOHs and representatives of the Association was held and the Commissioner promised to provide facilities for the health centre, the GMOA Branch Secretary said.
