Seed cultivation grows by over 250 pc in 2020 Q3

Seed cultivation in Sri Lanka in the third quarter of 2020 has increased by 256.65 percent compared to the third quarter in 2019, the Finance Ministry said in a media release yesterday.

During this period – from July 1 to September 30 – the agriculture sector has incurred a growth of 4.3 percent compared to the same period in 2019.

According to the Finance Ministry, cultivation of paddy, seeds, vegetables, rubber, fruits, spices and also livestock products and freshwater fishing have shown a growth during this period.

The country returning to normalcy following the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has positively affected this growth, the Ministry said.

However, saltwater fishing in Sri Lanka has decreased by 11.6 percent due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, coconut and tea cultivation also incurred a downfall in this quarter compared to the previous year.

The estimated Economic Growth Rate in Sri Lanka for the third quarter of 2020 is 1.5 percent.
