Seventeen suspects further remanded till January 25

Seventeen suspects including 13 police officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) who were arrested on drug trafficking charges were further remanded till January 25 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Mohamed Mihail yesterday.

When the matter was taken up before the court, the Magistrate issued an order directing the prison authorities to produce the 16th and 17th suspects before the court on the next calling date.

Attorney-at-law Ajith Pathirana and attorney-at-law Wasantha Pitigala appearing on behalf of the two boatmen indicted in this case stated that their clients had gone to sea by boat to bring narcotics into the country and that the trip had been arranged on the introductions of senior Police officers.

The Counsels further stated that the two boatmen are ready to provide the information related to the alleged ‘racket’ to the court as confidential statements. The attorneys-at-law also asked the Magistrate to issue an order directing the CID to produce IP Saman Wasantha Kumara, who hadbeen arrested in connection with the incident, in court. CID officers informed the court that five suspects including Constable Sumedha Weerasinghe, who were in the custody of the CID, have tested positive for Covid-19.
