Only State labs should conduct PCR tests for tourists - Ravi Kumudesh

The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests for tourists should definitely be carried out by government laboratories, President of the Sri Lanka Association of Government Medical Laboratory Technologists Ravi Kumudesh yesterday (11) stressed.

Commenting on the decision taken by certain health authorities to conduct PCR tests for tourists at private laboratories, Kumudesh warned that there is a possibility of malpractices when conducting PCR tests for tourists at private sector laboratories.

He further said that it was questionable whether there are virologists at private sector laboratories.

“The PCR laboratory established at the Bandaranaike International Airport is capable of conducting 4,000 PCR tests per day. If more facilities could be provided to this laboratory, a PCR test report would be issued within one and a half hours,” he said.
