Parliament functions under health guidelines - Secretary General

Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake stated yesterday that the Proceedings of Parliament will continue in adherence with health guidelines specified by the health authorities.

Subsequent to three Members of Parliament being infected with the COVID-19 virus, there was speculation that Parliament was unlikely to convene next week as several MPs had come into contact with Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader and Parliamentarian Rauff Hakeem who tested positive for COVID-19.

Dasanayake said that discussions had been held with the health authorities regarding the situation, adding that all the places where the COVID 19 infected MPs had been to, had been disinfected by now.

He noted that arrangements have been made with health officials to conduct PCR tests for the staff members at the Parliament complex during the next few days. The Staff will continue to perform duties in accordance with health regulations.

Meanwhile, the Committee on Parliamentary Business is scheduled to meet tomorrow (January 13) at 2 p.m. under the chairmanship of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to decide on the proceedings of the next sittings of Parliament.

Dasanayake stated that the staff of the Secretary General is ready to continue with the proceedings of Parliament in accordance with the decisions taken by the Speaker and the Party Leaders.
