We will resolve Jaffna University issue - Education Minister

Education Minister G.L Peiris said that as a Government we want to resolve the Mullivaikkal War Memorial issue at Jaffna University peacefully and we are not ready to give any opportunity to those who are trying to fish in troubled waters.

He was speaking at a press conference held at the Water's Edge in Colombo yesterday.

He further said that there is a rule that applies to all the existing universities in the country, accordingly, no statue, monument or any creation can be erected or displayed in the university premises without the approval of the relevant university. However, the authorities have decided to demolish it as no permission had been obtained regarding this, he added.

Meanwhile, speaking at the event Ports and Shipping Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena said that it was reported that some Members of Parliament had tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

“The Government has somehow controlled the COVID-19 virus. We are still acting as a responsible government to dace this epidemic. However, even under this COVID-19 epidemic situation, the country has to move forward” he added.

The President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has personally requested the Prime Ministers of India and the President of China in writing regarding the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines.

The Cabinet also spoke about this so that we can get the vaccine as soon as possible, he said.SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam was also present.
