No reversal in development projects due to COVID-19- State Minister Godahewa

State Minister of Urban Development, Coast Conservation, Waste Disposal, and Public Sanitation Dr. Nalaka Godahewa yesterday declared that the Government would neither turn back nor discontinue the economic development strategy and the development projects it has put forward under National Policy Framework, “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour,” either in the face of COVID-19 or any other threat.

He said that the Government has prioritized both its battle against COVID-19 pandemic and implementation of the programs to achieve ten key policies in the national policy framework of the government, to ensure that they go hand in hand. He said that is why bridges, houses, roads, irrigation canals and other infrastructure are still being built even during this period of the COVID-19 pandemic, and do not overlap with each other.

The Minister said so after he had inaugurated the second phase of the Middle Income Housing Project in Peliyagoda, which is expected to construct a flat housing scheme in Peliyagoda and provide some 504 housing units for middle income youth. Urban Development and Housing Ministry Secretary Sirinimal Perera, Urban Development Authority Director General Prasad Ranweera were present.

Prime Minister and Urban Development and Housing Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa instructed the Urban Development Authority recently to expedite the construction of these flats with an emphasis to ensure the housing quality and safety in them.

Dr. Godahewa said that he and his ministry expect contractors to complete the work as soon as possible.

He said, “President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, as per his National Policy Framework, “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour” has set the goal of constructing around 125,500 by 2024.”

The Ministry has already begun work on the construction of 10,000 houses. We assessed that between 40,000 and 50,000 jobs will be created through these projects.
