Cabinet nod for 300 MW LNG power plant in Kerawalapitiya

The Cabinet has approved the proposal for constructing of a LNG power plant and Lanka Transformers Limited has beenentrusted with the construction.

The power plant holding a capacity of 300 Megawatts will be built at the Kerawalapitiya Landanvi Power Plant premises. The installation of the new electricity generator is to be commissioned under the fourth phase of the Norochcholai Coal Power plant development project. The Norochcholai Power Plant’s phase one wascommissioned in 2011.

At present the plant adds 900 MW to the National Grid. In the meantime construction work ofthe Landanavi Liquefied National Gas (LNG) Power Plant is envisaged to beinaugurated thus making clean energy generation in the country.

According to the Power and Energy Minister DullasAlahapperuma at present around 35% of Sri Lanka’s National electricitygeneration is executed by the diesel power plants where the production cost perelectricity unit is at Rs 30 as against Rs 15 per unit being the productioncost per unit at the LNG Plant.
