SP schoolchildren attendance 45.78%

The attendance percentage of schoolchildren in the Southern Province was 45.78 percent on Monday (11) when the new school term commenced under the new normal situation, Southern Province Education Ministry Secretary Ranjith Yapa said.

Six hundred and ninety-eight (698) schools in the Southern Province were opened after keeping them closed for over four months to contain the spread of Coronavirus on the Education Ministry directives.

The number of students expected to come to school on Monday was 386,910 but the number of students who had come was 177,142, the Secretary to the Education Ministry further said.

The Provincial Education Ministry Secretary also stated that the attendance percentage of teachers in schools was 89.13 percent as only 28,494 teachers attended school although the number of teachers who should have attended was 31,969.

However, in some Educational Regions, the students’ attendance was comparatively satisfactory. Accordingly, the Divitura Educational Region in the Elpitiya Education Zone and the Yakkalamulla Education Region recorded students’ attendance percentages 77.28 percent and 71.29 percent respectively. The Matara Education Region recorded the lowest percentage of 21.02 percent.
