National Hospital gets new PCR machine

The PCR test laboratory established at Colombo National Hospital is capable of conducting 200 PCR tests daily, Hospital Director Dr. Kumara Wickremasinghe said.

So far PCR tests of patients admitted to the National Hospital conducted at the Medical Research Institute and the Mulleriyawa Base Hospital and it took five to six hours to receive a test report.

"With the establishment of the new laboratory, the hospital will be able to carry out emergency medical treatment and surgeries without any delay," the Director said.

The Tissa de Silva Foundation provided Rs.13 million to purchase laboratory equipment required to set up the laboratory and Hemas Group provided a PCR machine worth Rs. 5 million.

The Association of Cardiologists coordinated and guided the acquisition of the state-of-the-art medical equipment. Following the commencement of the laboratory work yesterday morning, the transfer of ownership documents to the Ministry of Health was handed over to the Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi.

Director General of Health Dr.Asela Gunawardena, cardiologists and representatives of Tissa de Silva Foundation participated in this occasion.
