Businessman remanded for defamatory statements

A businessman, Fazal Mohamed Nisar, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for sharing defaming posts aimed at Buddhist monks on social media, including Facebook, was remanded till January 18 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Mohamed Mihail. CID officers told the court that the suspect had issued various statements on Facebook in a manner that was insulting to various parties, including the monks, and which would act against inter-ethnic harmony.

The police further stated that almost all the businesses owned by the suspect have now collapsed due to the current situation. In addition, police also said that they are investigating whether the suspect was being paid by an illegal organisation to live such a luxurious life.

The Magistrate fixed further inquiries for January 18.
