Unauthorised constructions removed

Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekara had intervened to remove unauthorised constructions in Maharagama town to ensure the safety of the people, the Movement for the Protection of People’s Aspirations said.

Chief Sanghanayake of the Western Province, Ven. Wepathaira Hemaloka Thera said that as a complaint had been lodged with the police by the Maharagama Municipal Council, Minister Weerasekara had intervened and fulfilled his responsibility as the Public Security Minister.

Ven. Hemaloka Thera said this addressing a media briefing held in Maharagama yesterday.

He noted that although Minister Weerasekara had intervened as the minister in charge and fulfilled that responsibility, no one had been abused, persecuted or abused by the police. He said that it is every citizen’s desire that their city is beautiful.

Pointing out that the President had worked tirelessly to make Slave Island a beautiful place and had developed the Piliyandala Road to make Bellanwila a beautiful city, during his tenure as the Defence Secretary, he said it was necessary to remove all illegal structures in achieving this goal. However, looking at the plight of the people who are trying to make a living, special attention should be paid to their plight too in the process of beautifying the cities.

In this instance, the Thera noted that Minister Weerasekara had no intention of being unfair to those affected by the removal of these illegal constructions.

He said that Minister Weerasekara was not a person who would do injustice to anyone, adding that he is someone who had thought of his country and had even gone to Geneva to defend his country at his own expense.
