Polgolla Pingalpoththa Raja Maha Viharaya Chief Incumbent Ven. Dunukedeniye Kusaladhamma Thera commended the steps taken by the government to renovate the ancient Deegavapi Stupa in Ampara. He said that the previous government stopped the renovation of the stupa halfway.

The new government has set up a Presidential Task Force on Archaeological Heritage Management in the Eastern Province; they have taken steps to accelerate the renovation of the stupa.

The Deegavapi Stupa, which was built in 2 BC by King Saddhatissa, is one of the 16 historical sites of religious importance in the country as pilgrims from around the world venerate it, Ven. Kusaladhamma said.
