Officials gobble Rs. 280 mn in Anuradhapura City project

North Central Province Governor Maheepala Herath yesterday said Rs.280 million has been spent on officials and consultants attached to an Integrated Urban Development Project in Anuradhapura City funded by the French Agency for Development.

This project was launched by the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry under its Strategic Cities Development Programme.

The Governor said that project officials and consultants have drawn salaries and other perks running into Rs. 280 million without the project gaining ground. Governor Maheepala Herath said that the French Development Agency had signed agreement to fund US$ 57 million for the project. He was speaking at the District Development Committee meeting held at North Central Province auditorium on January 27.

“Nothing has been done under this project for the past four years.The project officials started working after we intervened in this issue,”he said.Herath said that this project was to be completed in four years but nothing has been done.

MP K.Nandasena said that no physical development is seen in the city though a colossal amount of money has been spent on the project.

The Urban Development Authority’s Provincial Director said that more than 20 sub projects have been commenced and four more projects are to be started soon.The UDA Provincial Director said paper advertisements have also been published for contractors to apply for these projects.
