Do not harm environment when developing tourism – Minister Prasanna

Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga yesterday advised officials to protect the environment when developing tourist attractions in forest conservations.

He added that eco-friendly tourism means facilitating tourists while protecting wildlife and the nature.

The Minister was addressing the Livelihood Development Committee Meeting at the Kalutara District Secretariat yesterday.

Around 133 tourist attractions in The Kalutara District have been identified and they will be promoted as tourist destinations in the future. Since most of them are in various wildlife and forest conservation zones, the Minister highlighted the importance of developing them in an eco-friendly manner without harming the environment.

He said these tourist attractions should be developed in coordination with the Wildlife Ministry. The Government has allocated Rs.30 million for the Kalutara District to develop tourist attractions. The development plan includes the modernization of the Kalutara Railway Station and the area surrounding the Thummodara Waterfall in Kalutara.
