Saliya Pieris alleges fake social media campaign to tarnish his image

President’s Counsel Saliya Pieris contesting for the post of Bar Association of Sri Lanka President for 2021-2022 alleged that a social media campaign is underway to tarnish his image in the run-up to the BASL election.

Pieris stated that distorted and edited videos are being shared on social media through fake and sponsored pages on Facebook and Whatsapp messages, making various baseless allegations against him. Pieris further said that he was aware that a similar campaign is being planned through sections of the media in the next few weeks.

“Such allegations are being made as part of a vicious campaign aimed at me in the run-up to the Bar Association elections, with the sole intent of tarnishing my image. These are instigated by persons who have stated in public that they will destroy me,” Pieris told the media.

Pieris reiterated that he is ready to respond to any allegation at an appropriate forum, if necessary.

“During my career I have always striven to conduct myself according to the highest standards of our profession. The members of the Bench and the Bar will be the best judges of my conduct in the profession. It is my hope that the members of the legal profession will deliver a strong message to those who are seeking to win at all costs without any regard to the profession or to common decency,” Pieris said.

The election to elect 26th President of BASL is scheduled to be held on February 24. President’s Counsel Saliya Pieris and President’s Counsel Kuvera de Zoysa are contesting for the post of BASL President this year.
