Miuni Dahamsa Dassanayake does her school proud

Thirteen year old Karate Gold Medalist and Swimmer. Miuni Dahamsa Dassanayake brought honour and fame to her Alma Mater C. W. W. Kannangara Vidyalaya, Hunumulla, , Minuwangoda. Miuni’s first school was Napokuna Vidyalaya Sandalankawa and she entered the school in 2012 when Chinthaka Ranasinghe was the Principal and her first class teacher was Mrs. Abeykoon. In the mean time her parents Indika Kumara Dassanayake and Sriyamalee Ranasinghe decided to admit their daughter to C. W. W. Kannangara Vidyalaya Minuwangoda and she entered Grade Six of that school in 2018.

As Miuni showed an interest in Karate she was admitted to a Private Karate Academy under Sugath Kumara and in the same year she commenced Karate at her school too under Namal Singhabahu and Mr. Samith and the Teacher in Charge was Miss Nisansala. As an under 12 competitor he participated in the Sri Lanka Schools Karate Junior Championship in Kumite and Kata and she got certificates for participation.

Then she participated in the Moiji Cup 2020 National Open Karate Championship in the under 13 age group and won Gold Medals for Kumite and Kata events. In the same year participating in the Ambassador of Japan Karate Championship she was selected among the Best Eight Players and awarded a certificate. Then taking part from her private academy in 2019 at the 7th Puttalam District Karate – do – Federation Meet she won a Gold Medal in Kata at the under 13 age group.

Then she was selected for the tour of ISKU International Karate Tournament in, India and won a Gold Medal for Kumite and Silver Medal for Kata and it was a fine exposure for her and after returning to the Island she participated in the ISKU International Online Kata Open Championship in the under 13 age category and got a Bronze Medal for Kata.

In addition she took part in Swimming at her at inter house meet as an under 12 competitor she won the 15 metre Back Stroke and in the Back Stroke 30 metre event too she came first and in the under 12 Free Style 30 metre event she came second.

In 2020 in the under 14 age group she was second in the 50 meter Free Style Event and came second in the 50 meter Butterfly Event and in the same meet she won a Gold Medal for 15 metre Breast Stroke with a record timing and with these performances under her belt she was selected for the North Western Provincial Meet but due to Coronavirus her hopes were shattered . The Assistant Principal Mrs. Dammika Tennakoon, and the Principal P. P. C. K. SIlva are always supportive of her.
