The city of music, Moratuwa, an ebullient piece of land of Mother Lanka, was in a gay mood on January 9, a jubilant day for the folks of Moratuwa, when the 3rd Lane, Rawatawatte was renamed as Nihal Nelson Mawatha.

Yes, the famous Legend Nihal Nelson, a proud Cambrian and a product of Prince of Wales College was felicitated thrice by celebrating his 75th birthday, unveiling a sub road after his name, and by launching a new CD of his songs.

The brain child of the programme was Thilak de Mel, President of the Lalitha Kala Sangamaya. Samanlal Fernando, Mayor, Moratuwa, shouldered the event to make it a success.

The programme was initiated by unveiling the name board by Wijeyadasa Rajapakse, Member of Parliament to the beat of “Magul Bera” by the students of the Chandana Wickremasinghe Dance Academy. After the Seth Pirith chanting, the group comprising of Anusha Gokula, Dilan Rodrigo, Wasantha Nanayakkara, Ariyasiri Withanage, officers of the Divisional Secretariat Moratuwa and many other guests were led in a pageant towards the stage where the traditional oil lamp was lit.

Thereafter, amid singing happy birthday and launching a CD of Nihal Nelson’s songs, a musical event commenced. Many famous singers in and out of Moratuwa: Janaka Wickremasinghe, President of the Singers’ Association, Keerthi Pasquel, Dhanapala Udawatte, Rajeew Sebastian, Chandani Freddy Silva and many other amateur singers sang songs sung by Nihal Nelson. Members of the Lalitha Kala Sangamaya joined in when Don Guy sang “Meka Gune Aiyage Bajaw Dana Kamare”. The event concluded when all the members of the Lalitha Kala Sangamaya honoured nelson by singing a baila.
