Writ petition challenging sand mining in Madampe area

A writ petition was yesterday filed in Court of Appeal seeking an order to cancel all the licenses issued by the Director General of Geological Survey and Mines Bureau to explore and mine minerals and sand in Madampe area in Puttalam District.

The petitioners Centre for Environmental Justice, its Executive Director Hemantha Withanage and four residents in Madampe area filed this petition naming the Director General of Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, Central Environmental Authority, Minister of Environment, Inspector General of Police and several others as respondents. The petitioners further stated that parties who have obtained mining licenses are acting in violation of the said licenses by mining in excess of the area and depth in respect of which the licensee is authorized to mine.

The petitioners further alleged that the fertility of the soil for coconut plantation has been affected due to erosion caused by sand mining and extractions in these areas and has caused serious environmental damage as well as drastic reduction in coconut yields, thereby affecting the livelihood of the local community.

The petitioners stated that contamination of water is another critical issue the local community is faced with due to extensive mining activities.
