Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa is to appoint a six-member Cricket Committee to make recommendations for the betterment of the game which right now is in a spot of bother after two series whitewashes recently.

After a meeting summoned by the Sports Minister with the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) officials last week, the governing body agreed in appointing a Cricket Committee consisting of former players. As per reliable sources former national players Ranjith Fernando, Aravinda de Silva, Roshan Mahanama, spin legend Muttaiah Muralitharan along with Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara are likely to serve in this committee.

After two back-to-back Test series defeats, one in South Africa and one at home, where the National team performed pathetically, the players, selectors and the SLC administration came under heavy criticism by the cricket loving fraternity on social media platforms and other media channels.

With the upcoming new appointments, the SLC has an idea of forming a second pool. The players who are unable to secure a place in the National team will be able to get into this pool which will remain as a backup ready to fill any vacancy created in the National side.

SLC is also in the process of reducing a certain percentage of the players’ annual contract and to introduce a new formula based on performance. This will create a win-win situation for both SLC and the players, and hopefully see a vast improvement in all three formats of the game.
