The National Chess Champion Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage of Ananda College Colombo beat Buddhika Amarasinghe of University of Sri Jayawardenapura Chess Club and Theekshana Denuwan of Ananda College Colombo beat Elath Mathanga De Silva to reach the top spot while the Round 4 leaders Minul Doluweera of Royal College Colombo and S. Sivathanujan of Kokuvil Hindu College (Jaffna) shared one point each with a hard fought draw in the fifth Round of the 8th Sri Lanka Chess Grand Prix 2021 on Sunday at the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka Headquarters. Four of them are having 4 ½ points each out of possible five games.

Earlier in the morning all four of them, Ranindu, Theekshana, Minul and Sivathanujan scored points against Ihsara Banindu Dahanayake (Royal College), Mohammed Nabil Nazar (Gateway International School, Colombo), Madushan Sameera Dissanayake and Buddhika Amarasinghe (SJP Chess Club) respectively.

The 8th Sri Lanka Chess Grand Prix 2021 conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka is in progress from 28th January 2021 to 7th February 2021 under strict health guidelines. The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka has offered a cash award of Rs. 110,000 to the winners with other attractive awards.

All games are webcasted live in each round and a live streaming of the first session of games will commence in full through the CFSL YouTube Channel. Shenuka Ahangama(D.S. Senanayake College) beat Nabil Nazar, Isara Banindu Dahanayake beat Jude Dorion and Pesandu Liyanage (D.S. Senanayake College) beat Madushan Sameera Dissanayake in the other three games in round 5.
