Fugitive drug lord Guna, son arrested in Chennai

The Tamil Nadu Q branch police has arrested Sri Lankan drug trafficker Kimbula Ela Guna, alias Gunasekaran (45) who had links with the LTTE, from the Chennai airport on Sunday night.

Based on Gunasekaran’s confession, the Central Crime Branch arrested four people, including his son Kennedy alias Bumma, from a hideout in the city on Monday. Other arrested men have been identified as Dileepan, Vigneshwara Perumal and Prabhakaran.

The five men have been lodged in Chengalpet sub-jail. Public Security Minister Rear Admiral Dr. Sarath Weerasekara said they were arrested based on a Red Notice issued by the Sri Lankan Police. The arrest has been in an operation jointly carried out by Interpol, Indian Police and local investigators.

He told the media that these underworld criminals wanted by Sri Lanka were arrested due to joint intelligence operations between Sri Lanka and India.”I thank the Indian authorities for arresting these dangerous suspects. Guna was a notorious underworld drug smuggler and a dangerous killer. The other Stanley Krishan was a contract killer and a notorious gunman,”he said.

He said discussions were underway for the repatriation of these criminals for further legal action. The Minister said these criminals had fled the country and had been living in India over the past 20 years.

Intelligence officers had uncovered that Sinnaiya Gunasekaram alias ‘Kimbula Ela Guna’ had fled to India as investigations were launched to arrest him in connection with the suicide bomb attack at a public meeting that injured former President Chandrika Kumaratunga on December 18, 1999.

Minister Weerasekara said steps will be taken to apprehend local drug traffickers and other underworld figures who are conducting their underworld operations from foreign countries.

“It is the responsibility of my ministry to ensure that all citizens can freely without any fear. I have been given the difficult task of ridding the society of all drug operators, criminals, child maestros, rapists and other anti-social elements and no matter how hard this task is I am committed to fulfilling the responsibility entrusted to me,” the Minister assured.

Police said Guna was nabbed after the arrest of his associate Alaga Perumaga Sunil Gamini alias Fonseka from a hideout in Bengaluru in October last year. The Q branch wing intercepted Gunasekaran, while he was about to board a flight to New Delhi.

The Tamil Nadu police reached their counterparts in Sri Lanka and informed them about the arrest of Gunasekaran and four others in Chennai. (TOI)
