National irrigation uplift begins tomorrow

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will inaugurate the ‘Irrigation Prosperity’ National Rehabilitation Programme soon. The Irrigation Ministry has launched a massive programme to provide irrigation water in line with the President’s “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour “ national policy statement. Irrigation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa has launched a national programme called ‘Irrigation Prosperity’ for the development of the irrigation sector and the rapid upgrade of rural tanks, anicuts and irrigation canals throughout the country to uplift national food production.

Mahaweli Zone Canals and Settlements Common Infrastructure Development State Minister Siripala Gamalath  will officially launch construction work of the North Central Province Maha Ela Project (Palugaswewa) to meet the drinking and irrigation needs of nearly 1.5 million people in the North and North Central Provinces.

“Wari Saubhagya” (Irrigation Prosperity) Tank Development programme is being implemented with the support of the Irrigation Department, Agrarian Development Department, nine Zonal Irrigation Directors, the Sri Lankan Mahaweli Authority and the provincial irrigation departments which are the main stakeholders. The State Ministry of Tanks, Reservoirs and Irrigation Development will coordinate the “Wari Saubhagya” programme headed by State Minister Anuradha Jayaratne. The inauguration of this irrigation development venture will take place on February 4, 2021, Independence Day.
