MP Premalal Jayasekera’s appeal fixed for argument

The appeal petitions filed by Ratnapura District Parliamentarian Premalal Jayasekera and two others challenging Ratnapura High Court’s judgement to convict them over the murder of an individual in a shooting that took place in 2015 were fixed for argument by Court of Appeal yesterday.

The Court of Appeal two-judge-bench comprising Justices Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and R. Gurusinghe fixed the appeal petitions for argument on June 16. The accused-appellants were directed to file their written submissions on or before March 22, while the Attorney-General was directed to file his objections on or before April 29.

On July 31, 2020, Premalal Jayasekera and two others were convicted by the Ratnapura High Court over the murder of Shantha Dodamgoda during the decorating of an election stage in Kahawatte.

Through their appeal, the three accused-appellants stated that they were seeking the Court of Appeal to review and set aside their conviction and the death sentences imposed by the Ratnapura High Court.

President’s Counsel Nalin Ladduwahetty, Anuja Premaratne PC, and Counsel Buddhika Chandrasekara appeared on behalf of the accused-appellants. Deputy Solicitor-General Sudarshana de Silva appeared on behalf of the Attorney General.
