Paddy harvesting in Ampara in full swing

The Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) and private millers have begun purchasing paddy from farmers following the Maha paddy harvesting in the Ampara District.

About 109,000-acres of land in the district has been cultivated during the 2020/21 Maha season.

The PMB stores across the Ampara District are open for the farmer community to sell their produce.

Farmers said they are happy as they were able to reap a bumper harvest this season. They said they had obtained an average yield of 100 to 120 bushels per acre.

Meanwhile, many traders and mill owners from Jaffna, Polonnaruwa and Batticaloa Districts are coming to the Ampara District to purchase paddy.

Meanwhile, in certain areas, paddy crops have been affected by the Brown Plant Hopper (BPH) –Arakotty disease. Therefore, their yield is expected to reduce to a certain extent.
