Wari Saubhagaya commences today

The Wari Saubhagaya (Irrigation Prosperity) Programme will be inaugurated today.

The Government will renovate around 30,000 tanks in the next five years under the programme. Under the first phase, 1,000 irrigation tanks in the Divisional Secretariat divisions will be renovated. Rs, 15,000 million will be spent on the Phase I and Rs 12.5 billion on the whole project.

The Irrigation Ministry, Provincial Irrigation Departments, Agrarian Development Department, the Security Forces, Civil Security Department and Land Reclamation Board will carry out the work without engaging any private constructors, Ministry sources said.

The Anuradhapura Provincial Irrigation Director said that the rehabilitation work of 22 rural tanks from 22 DS Divisions will be inaugurated between today and February 10. Work on the Thammenawa Tank in the Thambuththegama Mahaweli H Zone will be started today. He said that around 3,000 small tanks and over 2,000 tanks will be renovated.

He said that under the Phase I the tanks in the North Central and the Northern Provinces will be renovated.
