Unawatuna Coral reef cleaned

Unawatuna coral reef was cleaned on Monday jointly by the Galle Maritime Archaeological Unit, Ocean Sri Lanka Foundation, Central Cultural Fund and the Unawatuna Active Diving Club.

A group of schoolchildren was also involved in the effort. Rasika Muthukumarana, a marine archaeologist and diving consultant who regularly participated in the clean-up operation at the site, said the Unawatuna coral reef was heavily polluted.

The coral reef cleaners said that it contained non-perishable waste, including various banners, wax, and polythene. They said that the Unawatuna coral reef was heavily polluted.

Part of this waste was removed today and several more will be removed in the future, they said.
