National Coordinator of the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) Manjula Gajanayaka voiced his concerns whether the electors who are under quarantine or self quarantine on election day would be allowed to vote at the upcoming Provincial Council elections.

Gajanayaka said that at the 2020 Parliamentary election approximately 2,500 to 3,000 electors were unable to vote as they were at quarantine centres or self quarantined. Furthermore, political parties were not agreeable to suggestions put forward by a Committee comprising the Chairman of the Election Commission, health authorities and election monitors in this regard. Gajanayaka predicted that unless the pandemic is eradicated, there would be more than 100,000 persons under quarantine on any given date which the PC elections scheduled to be held in due course.

Gajanayaka stressed that it was imperative that the Election Commission initiate discussions with political parties and other sectors to address the issue and added that he would be submitting the CMEV's concerns to the Election Commission.
