Certain politicians making false statements over Kurudumale Viharaya excavations - Ven. Medhananda Thera

Pura Vidya Chakrawarthi Ven. Dr. Ellawala Medhananda Thera observed that Tamil politicians have made false statements with regard to the excavations being carried out at the Kurudumale Viharaya in the hope of getting votes.

Speaking at a media briefing held at the Department of Information yesterday, Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera alleged that some temples have been demolished and kovils built in those places. Ven. Medhananda Thera added that almost 99% of the antiquities are related to Buddhist temples.

“We have clearly defined the Kurudumale Viharaya as an ancient Buddhist Shrine,” Secretary to the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Professor Kapila Gunawardena stated. He also stated that several Tamil politicians and leaders have made false statements regarding the excavation of the Kurudumale Viharaya.

Director General of Archeology Anura Manathunga stated that they have started excavating the Kurudumale Viharaya considering its scientific importance. He further noted that British rulers in early 1900 had also considered this place as a Buddhist temple.

“A large number of archeological sites are located in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Most of them were Buddhist temples. Unfortunately, the antiquities in those places have been severely damaged. We have to focus on those places and renovate them. If antiquities are found there, all the benefits will accrue to the people living in the area,” he added.
