FITIS challenged over vaccine request

Many intellectuals and industry leaders have requested The Federation of Information Technology Industry Sri Lanka (FITIS) apex body for the ICT industry to withdraw their public statement urging the government to provide a corona vaccine to ICT industry employees as soon as possible on a priority basis.

The statement by Chairman of FITIS Abbas Kamrudeen said that at least 20% of the staff are front liners in the ICT industry. “Currently ICT Industry represents a workforce standing at above 100,000 and out of 20% employees are in the frontline, engaged in various ICT projects in the country, all of whom are at risk of infection due to their frequent moments,” the statement further said.

Former Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) Chairman Dr Rohan Samarajiva said in a Tweet message that FITIS should apologize for this request.”

Prof. Samarajeeva identified 15 groups in the higher priority list than IT professionals,”

FITIS requests COVID-19 vaccine for ICT industry employees were also criticized by tweets by several industry leaders and social media which points out that most of the ICT sector workers work from home and are hardly exposed to the virus-like other sectors.
