Government will always listen to people - State Minister

State Finance Minister Ajith Nivard Cabraal said the government will listen to the voice of its citizens more than the World Bank, International Monetary Fund or other powerful countries. He said the previous government was rejected by the people because they did not listen to the people and only listened to the the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the world’s most powerful countries.

State Minister Cabraal was speaking to the media after a public meeting in the Teldeniya area in Kandy. He said that the previous government had signed an MoU with India and Japan on the Colombo Port’s Eastern Jetty in May 2019 and that the current government had come to power and presented a new programme to the country and the previous agreements cannot be continued. He also added that the relevant countries have been informed regarding this.

He emphasised that several issues will come up when the agreements are not continued and that it is important to negotiate between the two countries without compromising relations.

“When we moved away from the MCC Agreement there was a tendency for those countries to create certain problems and it is the intention of the present government to resolve these issues. Loans obtained from India have been repaid on time and there is a possibility of requesting a loan again if required,” he said.

He said that the previous government had not been able to reduce interest rates despite being in power for five years, but that the present government had done so and that the people would get this relief when paying their lease installments.

Kandy District Coordinating Committee Chairman MP Wasantha Yapa Bandara was also present.
