Nipuna Nuwan Manatunge is a Grade Eleven student of Mawathagama National School who is an outstanding tennis player and a talented athlete and he was also a Gymnast who secured second place in the Under 8 Sri lanka Schools Gymnastic Championship and secured the fourth place at the South Indian Gymanstic Championship in the same age group in 2011.

After sometime when he grew up he was more interested in tennis as he was an Athlete and gave up gymnastic and started playing tennis while participating in athletics. His coach in both Tennis and Athletics was his Father, Jayalath Manatunge, former sportsman of Sri Lanka Army.

In 2012 Nipuna came first in 75 metres. Race and 3rd in 50 Metres. Race at the Veerodara Sports meet which was held for the S/L Army families. In the year 2014 he participated at the Mahaweli Reach Junior Tennis tournament for the first time and became Under 11 Singles champion. In the same year he participated at the Garden Club Tennis tournament and won the Under 11 Singles Title and was the Runners-up title at the same tournament in the Under 13 age group.

In 2015 Nipuna won the Kandy Garden Club Tennis title and participated at the tennis tournament conducted by the St.Anthonys’ College, Katugastota tennis Club in the Under 12 age group and emerged runner-up in the Under 14 age category. After these victories he was Ranked No.1 in Tennis in the Kandy district. In 2017 Nipuna continued his winning spree when he won both Under 13 and Under 15 Tennis titles at the Tennis tournament held at Mahaweli Reach Hotel, Kandy.

In 2019 he won the Under 17 Singles Tennis title at the Tennis tournament organized by the Mahaweli Reach Hotel and after these victories Nipuna has won five tennis titles in different age groups. As an Athlete he was the Champion Athlete in School from under 9 to 13 age groups in Long Jump and 75 metres.Race . He has also won the Long Jump and High Jump and has ended up third in the 100 metres. Race at the School Sports Meet. Due to covid epidemic they did not have tennis tournaments and at present his intention is to win more tennis titles in future when the tournaments are in progress. He is thankful to his father,Jayalath Manatunge who is his Coach as well, for the strenuous training he received Jayalath Manatunge is a former WO II in the Sri Lnka Army who has taken part in Para Olympics held in Athens, Greece in 2004.
