Twenty persons get three months’ RI over illegal sand mining

Twenty persons who pleaded guilty to illegal sand mining near the Deduru Oya was sentenced to three months’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) and fined Rs.10,000 each by Kurunegala High Court Judge Mapa Bandara, yesterday.

The judge also ordered the convicts to pay Rs.3,000 each as compensation to the injured former OIC of Rasnayakapura in Nikaweratiya. They would face an additional seix-month sentence in default of the compensation.

According to the court report, the incident had taken place on March 30, 2014, while a group of tractor drivers and their helpers were found carrying out illegal sand mining near the Deduru Oya. The suspects had attacked the police personnel who had arrived at the scene with their shovels before fleeing.

The convicts are residents of the Wariyapola and Kobeigne areas. State Council Janith Thilakarathna prosecuted.
