Rs.1,000 daily wage for estate workers through Wages Board

The Tea and Rubber Wages Board yesterday decided to increase the daily wage of Tea and rubber plantation workers up to Rs.1,000, Labour Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva said.

He said the daily wage Rs.1,000 includes a payment of Rs. 900 and a budget allowance of Rs. 100 per day for plantation workers. The decision was taken following a discussion of Tea and Rubber Wages Board participated by CEOs of plantation companies and plantation union representatives.

He said 11 votes were cast in favour of the proposal to pay the Rs.1,000 for the plantation worker made by union representatives.

The Minister said this increase was one of the pledges included in President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s National Policy Framework. The Government had to resort to the Tea and Rubber Wages Board to resolve the dispute as the plantation companies did not abide by the Collective Agreement.

The proposal made by the Wages Board to pay a daily wage of Rs.1,000 to plantation workers was passed by a majority vote yesterday.
