SL to field six-member team for World Para GP

A six-member Sri Lankan Para Athletics team will compete in the first-leg of the World Para Athletics Grand Prix (GP) Meet, which commences in Dubai today.

Asian gold medalist Amara Indumathi and Kumudu Priyanka will compete in the women’s long jump event today while Priyanka will also compete in the women’s 100m T46/47 event tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Gamini Ekanayake (Javelin) and Palitha Bandara (Shot Put) will compete in their respective events on February 12.

In addition, Sampath Hettiarachci (Javelin) Amara Indumathi (400m) and Saman Maduranga Subasinghe (400m) will compete in their events on the final day of the meet on February 13.

In fact, both Eakanayake and Hettiarachchi are vying for Paralympic qualification in the Javalin Throw event.

Manager of the team, Colonel Deepal Herath said that this is a good opportunity for the Sri Lankan Para athletes to get qualification for the forthcoming Paralympic Games which is scheduled for August 24 to September 5 in Tokyo, Japan.

Herath, who is also the High-Performances Manager of the National Paralympic Committee added that Dinesh Priyantha Herath (F46) the Paralympic bronze medalist and Samitha Dulan (F44) have already qualified for the next Paralympics in the Javelin Throw event.

Both were originally named in the Sri Lanka team but they were not included for the Grand Prix Meet following their early qualifications for the Tokyo Games.

Herath and Dulan are among the top four in World Rankings and are expected to perform well.

In addition, Eakanayake and Hettiarachchi are also in contention to qualify for the Paralympics in the Javelin Throw event.

“This is a good sign for Sri Lankan Para athletics with more athletes fighting to obtain qualification in the same event,” said Colonel Herath.

After the first Grand Prix event in Dubai there will be six more events in Tunisia, Brazil, Italy, China, France and Switzerland.
