Despite the outbreak of Covid-19, the North Central Province (NCP) has shown a record improvement in rural development activities. Provincial Rural Development Director Gayan Indika Wannninayake told the Daily News that there are 675 rural development societies actively engaged in development projects under President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s ‘Vistas of Prosperityand Splendour’ policy framework.

“When I assumed duties as the Provincial Rural Development Director, the rural development fund stood at Rs. 140 million and even during the recent lockdown period, due to untiring efforts and endeavours of the rural community, we were able to increase it to Rs. 330 million. We have been able to establish 3,000 organic home gardens in the province,” he said.

“As an example, we awarded Rs. 100,000 recently to Upulwiya Women’s Rural Development Society in Parangiyawadiya in the Horowpothana Division, an underdeveloped hamlet. The Society members managed to increase it to Rs. two million,” he added. The Provincial Director said this achievement is marvellous since they achieved their targets during the spread of Covid-19.
