Kavindu’s all-round performances steer Kalutara Vidyalaya

Kavindu Gayashan Jayawickrema, a left hand batsman and a left arm leg-spinner who is a product of Kalutara Vidyalaya has shown great talent in the schools cricket arena as an all-rounder.

Playing in the under 19 Division Two Iinter Schools Cricket Tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association Kavindu scored 685 runs and claimed 82 wickets in 2019/20 season.

Kavindu was born on 12th December, 2000 in Kalutara. He attended Kalutara Vidyalaya in 2006.

Kavindu started his cricket career at the cricket academy of Kalutara Vidyalaya under the coaches Nalin Fernando and Sunil Silva in 2010. He represented the school under 13 ‘B’ team under the guidance of Sarathchandra De Silva, principal of the college and Sunil Saluwadana, the cricket coach in 2011. He scored more than 100 runs and claimed 13 wickets in his first year. He was promoted to the under 13 team ‘A’ in 2012. He scored more than 200 runs and claimed 29 wickets in the 2012 season. He scored more than 300 runs and claimed 38 wickets in 2013. He represented the college under 15 teams in 2014 and 2015 under Rumesh Ranagana, junior coach of the college. He scored more than 150 runs and claimed 19 wickets in the under 15 Division One tournament in 2014. Kavindu scored more than 200 runs and claimed 21 wickets in under 15 Division One tournament in 2015.

He represented the college under 17 team in 2016 and 2017 under Sunil Saluwadana, senior coach of the college and Buddhika Priyashantha assistant coach. He scored more than 150 runs and claimed 14 wickets in the under 17 Division One tournament in 2016. He scored more than 200 runs and claimed 14 wickets in the under 15 Division One tournament in 2017.

Kavindu represented the school under 19 teams as a fresher in 2015/16 season under the guidance of Rumesh Milroy Silva, senior coach of the school. He scored more than 150 runs with a fifty in five matches. He represented the school team in the big match against Tissa MMV, Kalutara in 2016. He scored more than 200 runs and claimed seven wickets in the under 19 season in 2016/17. In the following season Kavindu performed well with his bowling and claimed 62 wickets with for five-wicket hauls and two 10- wicket hauls under the guidance of Indika Pieris, principal and Sunil Saluwadana, coach.

He captained the college first XI team in 2018/2019 season and steered his team to the semi finals of Division Two tournament. He scored 333 runs with three fifties and claimed 69 wickets with five five-wicket hauls and one 10-wicket haul in the same season. Kalutara Vidyalaya won the big match after 10 years and also won the limited over match after five years under the leadership Kavindu Jayawickrama. Kavindu was awarded the Best Bowler trophy in the big match in 2019.

He scored 685 runs with a century and four half centuries in 2019/20 season. His best batting performance was 133 runs against Christ King College Ja Ela. He made half centuries against St. John’s Panadura (73), Sri Jayawardenapura MV Kotte (72), St. Sebastian’s Katuneriya (65) and vs St. John’s Jaffna (69).

Kavindu claimed 82 wickets with eight five-wicket hauls and a ten- wicket haul in last season. His best bowling performance was 7/38 against Holy Cross Kalutara.

He scored more than 1800 runs with a century and eight half centuries while claiming 220 wickets in five under 19 seasons.
