Athlete, volleyball player, opening bowler, all rounder, right hand bat, right arm bowl, second year coloursman G. Rushiru Hanshika Peiris brought honour and glory to his Alma Mater by being an all round sportsman at Dhammissara National School Nattandiya. Though he performed well in cricket his forte is volleyball. He joined Dhammissara National School in 2007 when Nandana Yapa was the principal and his first class teacher was Mrs. Piyathilaka.

As an under seven student he participated in the Inter House Athletics Meet in 2008 and competed in 50 meters, long jump and high jump. He was adjudged the Champion Athlete for three consecutive years as he swept the board in the same three events competing in under 8 and 9 age categories. He was well supported by the teacher in charge of athletics, Mrs. Piyathilaka.

He commenced playing volleyball in 2012 under Mr. Nuwan and in 2013 he came under the Prefect of Games Keerthi Jayasekera and the coach Channa Jayasekera. Rushiru was a member of the Inter-House volleyball runner-up team in 2013. Dhammissara NS maintaining its high standard in volleyball emerged winners at the Divisional and Zonal tournaments. In 2014 they secured the second place at Zonal level. In 2015 they won the Inter-House volleyball championship.

In 2015 they became first in Divisional and Zonal volleyball tournaments secured the runner-up position at the DSI All Island Volleyball Tournament. In 2017 in the DSI Tournament they came fourth and in the same year participating at the All Island Tournament Dhammissara NS won the fourth place. In 2018 they were the All Island DSI Champions and Inter Schools Champions when Rushiru was the vice captain of the team. He was awarded school Colours for Volleyball.

In the 2019 Dialog Open President’s Cup Volleyball Tourney Rushiru captained the Nattandiya Volleyball Club team which eventually emerged champions under the guidance of coach Channa Jayasekera. In recognition of this achievement the champion team was offered a tour to Malaysia by the past pupils of the school and it has been a great experience to Rushiru and his team.

With these performances under his belt Rushiru was selected to the Youth Sri Lanka Tour of Iran. But due to Covid-19 pandemic the tour was postponed.

Rushiru ‘s passion for cricket did not die as he continued his cricketing career from under-13 age category. He was selected to the school under-13 team in 2008 when Nuwan Ruchira was the coach and captured 20 wickets including one five wicket-haul with a match bag of 9 for 50 (5/35 and 4/15) being his personal best.

In 2009 under-15 season he excelled in bowling and passed the 200 mark with 15 scalps including one five- wicket haul. In his under-15 second year he claimed 150 runs with a fifty and claimed 25 wickets with two five- wicket hauls. But representing the under 17 team as a fresher he did not perform well and captured 13 and 15 wickets respectively in those two years.

In his first year in the under 19 season he passed the 300-run mark with a half century and captured 20 wickets with two five-wicket hauls. In his final year he could only grabbed 17 wickets. In the same year his school team was selected as the Best Team of the under 19 Division Three Tournament. He was selected to the District and Provincial Cricket Pools but due to Covid-19 pandemic both tournaments were postponed. His Master in Charge Keerthi Jayasekera, the principal Anil Pushpakumara and Deputy Principal Mrs. Nilmini Rodrigo always encouraged him and Rushiru’s parents Rohan Kumara Peiris and Mali Bernadeth Geethika were always behind him in his success.
