Death sentence for drug peddler

A person who was found guilty of possessing and peddling around 328g of heroin was sentenced to death by the Southern Provincial Galle High Court Judge W.P.S Nissanka.

The accused, Sudath Nishantha Komangodage (51), a resident of the Gonamulla area in Galle was arrested in 2001.

An indictment was filed in the Galle High Court on May 15, 2001 against the accused for the possession and trafficking of heroin.

According to the information received by the Colombo Narcotics Bureau from a private spy, the officers of the Narcotics Bureau had arrested the suspect with the said quantity of heroin.

Delivering the verdict, the High Court Judge said that although the accused had made a statement from the dock during the trial stating that he had been falsely accused, it had not revealed that the police officers had any resentment or previous acquaintance or any other problem with the accused.

“Accordingly, the complaint has been proved beyond reasonable doubt,” the High Court Judge said.

When asked by the High Court judge what he had to say before the death sentence was delivered, the defendant pleaded not guilty. State Counsel Randima Fernando prosecuted.
