Shanil Akarsha Perera is a Grade 11 student of St.Sylvester’s College,Kandy and is a talented gymnast who has been appointed as the captain of the school gymnastic team for the year 2021. He started gymnastics under the coaching of Amal Rasanga, an old boy of the school and a Level One International Coach who has produced many gymnasts for a long time

Shanil started gymnastics in 2011 when he was six years old and in the following year 2012 as a debutant he became first in Floor exercise and third in Vault at the Central Province Meet and at the District Meet again he ended up second in Floor exercise and Vault.

In 2013 he emerged first in Floor and second in Vault at the District Meet.

Shanil gained more experience in gymnastics when he participated at the Junior National Meet held in the year 2015 and finished fourth in Vault and at the XLI National Festival he ended up third in Floor event. He secured the second place in Floor and Vault at the Kandy District Novices Championship.

In 2016 and 2017 his victories were much more and at first he won the Vault event at the Junior National Meet in 2016 and won the third place in Vault event at the Kandy District Gymnastic Championship. He ended up second in High Bar, Floor and Vault at the Provincial Gymnastic Competition and secured second in both Vault and Floor events at the Junior Nationals. He came third in Vault at the All Island Games in the same year and emerged first in Floor, second in Vault and third in High Bar events.

At the National Sports Festival he became third in both Floor and Vault events and he ended up third in Floor and fourth in Vault and High Bar events at the Junior Nationals in the same year.

In the year 2018 he continued participating in gymnastic competitions for the seventh successive year and in the same year became first in Floor, second in Rings and third in both Parallel Bar and Vault events. At the All Island School Games he secured third in Vault and at the XLIV National Sports Festival he emerged second in Floor event.

The year 2019 was an year full of success when he continued gymnastic for the eighth successive year at the Sri Lanka Junior Championship and came second in Vault. He secured the first place in Floor and second in Pommel Horse and third in Parallel Bar and Rings at the Junior Nationals and again in 2019 at the Artistic Gymnastics Meet he became first in Floor and Vault and became the Runner-up of the Meet.At the XIV National Sports Festival he emerged first in High bar and Floor and third in Pommel Horse and vault events. In 2020 he participated at the Sports Festival and secured the first place in Floor and Vault and second in Parallel Bar, Rings and High Bar and third in Pommel Horse events and at the 46th National Sports Festival he was placed second in Floor and Vault events.

Shanil Akarsha’s intention is to represent Sri Lanka at International Competitions and he is thankful to his Coach Amal Rasanga who is an International Level one Coach for training him to come upto to this standard.
