Pre-League soccer to kick-off on Feb. 17

The Pre-League Soccer Tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Football (SLF) will kick-off on February 17 with the participation of 10 teams at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo.

This tournament which is conducted as a dress-rehearsal before the commencement of the inaugural professional tournament in the country, the ‘Super League’ which is to commence in mid-April, will enable all players representing their clubs to get back to football after almost a 10-month break due to the COVID-19 second sprain.

The 10 teams competing are, Renown SC, Ratnam SC, Blue Star SC, Defenders SC, and Red Star SC is in Group ‘A’ while Up-country Lions SC, Sea Hawks SC, New Young FC, Colombo FC and Blue Eagle SC will vie for honours in Group ‘B’.

Each team will play four matches every Saturday and Sunday at the Sugathadasa Stadium with the first match scheduled to commence at 5.00 p.m and the second match at 8 p.m. under closed doors.

Meanwhile, four foreign players including one player from an Asian country will be eligible to represent each team.

Furthermore, each club will be granted a total of Rs. 3 million in several slabs to encourage the teams.

“We are delighted to make a kick-start for this tournament which will be a prelude for the Super League. We are thankful to the stakeholders who worked tirelessly to make this a reality,” Anura de Silva, President SLF said during a media briefing in Colombo on Wednesday.

“Amidst several obstacles and challenges, we managed to clear all hurdles and give the teams a pre-season to get conducive to football after a long break. We are looking forward to witnessing an exciting competition in the next several months which is a great sign for the game,” said Jaswar Umar, Secretary SLF.
