Karateka Sethum Semitha does Kuliyapitiya Central proud

Karate Brown Belt holder Sethum Semitha Gunawardene brought honour and fame to his school Kuliyapitiya Central College and ISKU Karate Academy. His first school was Aswadduma Subarathie Vidyalaya and the Principal was Gamini Ratnayake and his first class teacher was Mrs. Nimali. Sethum was admitted to Aswadduma Subarathie Vidyalaya in 2012 and when he was in Grade four in 2015 he took part at the Inter House Athletics Meet in 4x100 metres relay event under seven and his team came first and after passing the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination he was drafted to Kuliyapitiya Central College.

When he was five years old his parents Muditha Gunawardene and Mangala Ambogama decided to hand over their son to the school Karate Coach Peter Perera. Later to enhance his skills they admitted their son to a private Karate Academy under Sugath Kumara. His first meet was in 2017 and in the fifth Puttalam District Karate Championship he gave a fine start by claiming Golds for Kumite and Kata. His next outing was International under 9 Gojura Kumite Karate Shotokan Meet under 9 age group and he won a Gold for Kata and Bronze in Kumite.In the same year at the G. A. T. Livera Foundation Meet he got Golds for Kumite and Kata and at the 2017 Open Karate Championship he won Golds for Kata and Kumite and at the Puttalam District under 10 event he won Gold for Kata and Silver for Kumite.

In 2018 at the North Western Province 27th Karate Championship under 10 he won a Gold for Kata and a Gold for Kumite and in the All Island Meet he won a Bronze for Kumite and came among the Best Eight in Kata At the G. A. L. Livera Meet he won Golds for Kata and Kumite and in the Open Karate World-Do Championship Meet he won Golds for Kata and Kumite and finally 2018 at the Gojuru Karate and Japan Shotokan Meet he won Golds for Kumite and Kata.

Then in 2019 at the 7th Puttalam District Meet in the under 11 age group he got a Gold for Kata and a Silver for Kumite and in the North Western Province Meet he won Bronzes for Kata and Kumite. In the Sri Lanka All Island Karate Tournament he came to the Best Eight and in the 23rd Open Karate Championship Kesho Karate International Tournament he won a Bronze for Kumite and in the Open Karate Championship GAETANO – ESANO Meet he won a Gold for Kumite. In 2020 at the Online Kata Championship he won a Silver organized by International Shotokan. For his fine performances he has been already selected for the Karate Kumite Squad in 2019.

In addition he did Swimming for the under 13 age group and he came first in 50 metre Freestyle Event and selected to represent the Divisional Meet. But due to Coronavirus the Meet was postponed. His Karate Coach Rohitha Tissera and Principal D. C. S. Wijesinghe were very supportive of him. During the span of four years Sethum has won 23 Medals for various tournaments which includes 17 Golds two Silvers and four Bronzes.
