Premier fetes China on Lunar New Year

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has recorded a video message to congratulate the Chinese leaders and people on the coming Lunar New Year of the Ox on February 11 (the eve of Chinese New Year),

The PM's message which was telecast by the National TV of China and the main news agencies was well received, the Chinese Embassy in Colombo said.

The Premier, while extending his felicitations to President Xi Jinping, Premier Likeqiang and the people of China for the upcoming Chinese New Year, remarked that the long standing friendship and cooperation between Sri Lanka and China continued to grow stronger in challenging times.

"Sri Lankan people deeply appreciate the assistance provided by China. As the world prepares to vaccinate the global population, we appreciate President Xi’s commitment to make the Chinese vaccine a global public good, including his efforts to aid 53 developing countries. Sri Lanka is grateful for the first batch of 300,000 vaccine doses donated by China," he said in his statement. "As a development partner, China has provided support to Sri Lanka for decades. As Sri Lanka prepares for the post-COVID economic recovery, we know China will continue to support our future development. We also look forward to welcoming more Chinese tourists to Sri Lanka as global travels to return to normalcy."

In his capacity as the leader of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), he also extended his congratulations to the Communist Party of China for its 100th birthday and all its achievements for the past 100 years.
